Today is one of those days at Beanetics... the old show comes down and a new show is installed. While every show is special, this current show has a few things about it that make it extra-special.
First, it is the artwork of Beanetics coffee roaster and store manager, Corinne (Wren) Hiland. She is the second Beanetics employee to have a show. Remember last year when Peter Flint had a very successful debut photography exhibit here? Like Peter, this exhibit is Corinne's debut exhibit.
Second, this show demonstrates a breadth of work. Most individual shows exhibit a single medium. the exhibit space in the store is limited and usually having multiple genres from one artist could look confusing and like a high school portfolio. But Wren has pulled it off... creating a multidimensional show that invites the viewer in, again and again.
While some of the pieces are conventional, like the crisp, clean photographs of sails (see "Sheets" and "Lines") other pieces show her talent at creating simple line drawings that are pleasing to the eye (see "Bayou"). Several of Wren's pieces have an unexpected twist: Like the line drawing collage, "Peter Rinehart," which is a portrait of a British shoplifter from the 1800s. Why does someone chose him as a portrait subject? Or her piece, "Petals," which includes real human teeth in the assemblage. Want to know about the roasting process? Check out Wren's piece, "Time and Temp."
Wren's exhibit, "Regular Show" is anything but regular! You need to see this one!
The exhibit runs through Tuesday, January 18th, 2011. Stop by any time the store is open.
We are having an artist reception. "When?," you ask.
DATE: Saturday, January 8th
